Why we love this flower:
The Japanese Anemone is a fibrous-rooted, woody-based late summer to fall flowering herbaceous perennial that typically grows to 2' to 2.5' feet tall. This plant will form a foliage clump to 12” inches tall of 3-parted, dark green leaves on long petioles. Long, upright, wiry-but-graceful, branching flower stems rise well above the foliage clump in late summer to 30” inches tall, bearing single, cup-shaped, flowers that are 2-3” inches in diameter. Each flower contains 5-7 showy, rounded, pinkish-white to pale rose-mauve petals with a contrasting green button-like center containing a ring of yellow stamens.
Patience is needed when planting from seed and awaiting for this garden beauty to show off. It may take a season or two before sending up pretty flowers, but once it's established, some would consider the spreading habit to be invasive. The delicate branching stems can be a beautiful focal flower in modern arrangements, or stunning when used as a filler. Flowers bloom late summer into fall often extending to first frost (late July/August to October). While it likes partial shade, don't plant where there is too much shade as the flowers will flop over, and you won't enjoy the benefit of the flowers dancing in the breeze.
