Why we love this flower:

  • Uses: Cut flower, beautiful filler, ideal for drying
  • Garden growth success: Easy, low maintenance

Floral designers love working with Quaking Grass which will beautifully transform any bouquet with its delicate shape. The flattened hop-like seed heads dangle on thread-like stems. The greenish-yellow flowers have a sheen of purple and fade to a warm buff color as they mature.

In the garden, Quaking Grass is an ornamental grass with clumps of erect narrow leaves. The tiny flowers appear in Spring in loose, airy panicles atop stems rising 2' to 3' feet. With the slightest breeze the seed heads will quiver and produce a lovely rattling sound.

The seeds can be sown at any time of year. Quaking Grass can be a somewhat slow grower and will take 3 to 5 years to reach its full height. Cut back clumps immediately after seed heads disintegrate to encourage additional foliage growth. Clumps may be mowed on high setting in late fall or dead foliage can be cleared in late winter. Note, no serious insect or disease problems but is intolerant of hot summers.
